St. Cronan's Monastery Roscrea
As mentioned in the last newsletter The O'Tierney Clans Society Gathering will be held in The Abbey Court Hotel, Dublin Road, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary from August 23rd to 26th inclusive and will be part of ‘The Gathering Ireland 2013’ initiative. The events at the gathering will include Lectures/Talks, Tours, Dinner, Music and Craic. There will be opportunity for those interested in Genealogy to research and share information. Children young and old will be catered for with fun crafts, Mini Archaeological dig, face-painting etc. All children’s activities will be supervised by expert personnel. Enclosed with this newsletter is a Registration Form and a proposed Agenda for the weekend.
A grant has been received from the Irish Government under the Gathering 2013 initiative and from North Tipperary County Council. Above are the logos of the two sponsoring organisations. However in return for the funding we have made commitments as to the numbers of overseas visitors our gathering will attract. If we do not reach this figure we will have to return the funding. So we need commitments from you. We are well short of this figure at the moment but we are hopeful that many more Tierneys will commit and come along. Because of this assistance we have been able to reduce the costs to attendees for the various activities. The Clan are also funding research into the patrimony and history of the Ormond Sept of Tierneys and, as most of the research has already been done, it is envisaged that the results of this research will be made public at the Gathering. This is a first and major initiative by the clan and these results will shed new certainty on our history.
You can e-mail me at [email protected]. It would also be helpful if you visited our Gathering webpage at www.thegatheringireland.com - and in the search box type Tierney and then follow the links, or you could go direct to http://www.thegatheringireland.com/Attend-A-Gathering/Individual-Gathering.aspx?eid=1766 . It would be a great help if you were to click the ‘attend’ button on the right-hand column and perhaps get others to do so as well and they will be sent information by the Gathering Ireland 2013 body.
So all of Tierney descent in the Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, U.K. USA, and where-ever come and you will be most welcome. Hope to see you all here in Ireland - end of next August.
The week before our Gathering is the National Heritage Week 2013 which takes place during the week of 17th-25th August 2013. This is always a great occasion with activities going on all over the country organised by The Irish Heritage Council and heritage centres all over the country. Most of the activities are free of charge. Entrance to most heritage sites throughout the country is also free of charge. See http://www.heritageweek.ie for more details. The weekend following our Gathering sees the start of a series of events commemorating people from Tipperary who were transported to, mainly Australia, for various crimes against the State. You can get details of these events at http://www.thegatheringireland.com/AttendAGathering/IndividualGathering.aspx?eid=2158#.URlA9B003uQ . So around the time of our Gathering there will be so much to see and do in Ireland that Nenagh, Co. Tipperary will definitely be the place to be.
